Modern auto industry is full of sophisticated drivetrain technologies which are supposed to make your driving experience even more pleasant and trouble-free. Despite a great abundance of sophisticated technical solutions, it is highly likely that very few people know a transmission solution operating like a manual CVT.

Over recent years engineers developed a lot of gear shifting solutions for different car brands, which may seem a bit unusual for oldtime drivers. In this article we will review the most peculiar gear stick technologies and provide video materials related to these technologies.

Only few people know about transmission concepts which were popular 70-90 years ago. For men of today, these gearboxes may seem very unusual and weird, but even now some gearboxes that date back to those years are quite competitive in comparison with modern transmissions.

Nowadays Extroid CVTs are commonly known as “toroidal” due to the fact that the working surface of driving and driven discs in this transmission has the form of a torus. Extroid CVT is not a V-belt transmission, but a friction drive CVT.

Twitches in automatic transmission? What is the problem?

Twitches in automatic transmission? What is the problem?

Why are there twitches with your automatic transmission?

Automatic transmission is currently installed on a large number of cars, but drivers are divided in their opinions about it. Some agree that it is extremely convenient, others say that it is more trouble than good. In particular, the claims relate to very expensive repair rates, because certainly, just as any other engineered element, it sometimes fails.

Of course, any failure will make itself visible by the corresponding manifestations, so the driver will be able to start the process, carry out required repairs without going to extremes, waiting until the need for complete replacement of parts arises.

Of all the problems, drivers are more likely to complain that when changing gears, the machine starts to twitch. This is the most important sign that something is wrong with this mechanism. It is very important not to keep on going with this problem and fix it as quickly as possible, because it is not known at what point the situation may worsen.

There are several reasons why the automatic transmission starts to twitch at all:

· Problems in operation or complete failure of the torque converter.

· Some parts of the mechanism are severely or completely worn out and need to be replaced.

· All available adjustments are detuned.

· Poor operation and uneven movement of the cable (its deterioration).

· Problems with the electrical part of the box (restricted current flow, short circuits within the mechanism, etc.)

· The control unit is not working properly.

· Seriously worn-out condition of the clutches.

It is worth noting that these troubles can affect any gearbox, which in the end threatens with its complete failure.

If the twitches are felt only when you decrease or increase speed, then the range of reasons can be somewhat narrowed:

• There is too little or too much transmission fluid in the mechanism.

• The transmission fluid itself was poorly selected or is no longer suitable for use.

• Cushions of the transmission are in bad condition.

• There are problems in the chassis of the car (most likely clearances).

• The car (engine) is poorly warmed up, but in this case the problem should disappear after a good warm-up.

Basically, the problem is determined after diagnostics of both the entire car and the gearbox in particular. This may also be indicated by uneven or incorrect pressure in the hydraulic system or unstable engine operation at any speed.

The solution to the problem depends, in fact, on the type of the problem. If the matter is due to the liquid type, it is most often replaced (it is important that it is suitable for a specific automatic gearbox type) and then you shall strictly control the liquid level. If the reason is in worn-out parts, then they should definitely be replaced with new ones and simply do not try to repair them or save on the purchase of the replacement parts.

By the way, it is better to use the transmission fluid that is recommended by the manufacturers of a particular car. Moreover, it is important to change it exactly at a certain time (along with the filters). This will extend the service life of the automatic transmission itself.

We advise not to target saving when buying elements of the gearbox, since bad purchase will cost you complete gearbox replacement later, and this will be much more pricy (besides, you might require a lot of time and effort looking to find the necessary parts).
